Gastric Bypass

What is the operation of
Gastric Bypass and how it works?

The operation of gastric Bypass is performed by laparoscopic surgery, and involves reducing the stomach and make the food go straight from the stomach is reduced toward the end of the intestine (“bypasseando” the greater part of the intestine, hence their name)

Thus, the operation consists of two phases:

First, it reduces the stomach, seccionándolo in its highest part, and leaving it divided
in two parts:

• A part of the stomach is very small (about 50 CC) that receives the food that comes from the mouth, so that the patient can eat an amount of food is small in each meal.

• A “residual” of the stomach, where it does not pass the food, but not removed, and which continues to release their juices, which will by the way “normal” to join with the liver and the pancreas (juices biliopancreáticos).

The second part of the intervention is to bypass the gut, so that the secretion of juices biliopancreáticos and food come together from 75 to 200 cm of the stomach (so that the intervention is called bypass) and so does NOT absorb a large part of the food that is ingested.

• Cut the intestine and is joined by a hand to the small stomach that had been left up
• And on the other hand, is spliced to the 75-200 cm of distance.
Thus, this intervention is a technique malabsortiva: we reduce the ability of the stomach to accommodate food (ranging from approximately 1000 CC typical of the stomach of an obese person to about 50 CC after the intervention), and in addition puenteamos (bypaseamos) the bowel to NOT absorb much of the food you eat.

By the malabsorption that occurs is the technique most successful in the weight loss. But the characteristics of risk should only be used in selected patients. As we have said, our group performed the operation by laparoscopic. The duration of the intervention comes out to be an average of three hours.

After the intervention, it is frequent that the patient will have to spend at least one night in an Intensive Care unit. During the intervention are left drains intra-abdominal which will be monitored by the surgeons during the following days for early detection of possible leaks that may occur.

In what cases of obesity is indicated for the realization of the operation of laparoscopic Gastric Bypass?

This intervention arises in patients with a BMI> 45 and < de 54.

How is the postoperative period after operation of gastric Bypass?

The use of laparoscopy allows a post-operative recovery very quickly, as the problems are very small compared to the perform the procedure by opening the abdomen, which avoids the complications of a slower recovery. Usually sufficient for 3 to 5 days of hospitalization.

What real risk is the operation of gastric Bypass?

Before any surgical procedure there are risks. Some of them stem from the fact of going through the operating room and depend on the disease that has led one to the operating room. In this case, and due to obesity, there is a special risk of deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism. This is because there is a greater risk of obesity, and not to the surgical technique. To avoid this increased risk you take all the preventive measures concerned (such as the use of compression stockings and heparin or ambulation early for the prevention of thrombosis).

What can I eat after gastric Bypass?

You will be able to eat practically any kind of food. This is the main advantage that we have patients who have had this technique, because it has fewer restrictions from the point of view of diet than the other techniques. However, having a smaller stomach can give an early satiety and need lesser quantity of ingested food to feel satisfied.

How much weight will I lose after Gastric By-pass?

The gastric Bypass is the technique most successful in the weight loss. But the characteristics of risk should only be used in selected patients. We're getting an average of results from loss of 70-80% of the overweight. The greatest loss occurs during the first 6 months. The weight loss are permanent, as long as the patient maintains the new dietary habits.
